Personal:

In October '09 I weighed 248 lbs, and slept 16 hours a day.  I was miserable.  I decided to change that.  So far I've lost nearly 80 lbs, and started running.  It's been my dream, ever since I was a fat little kid, to run in the Boston Marathon... because I was born there.  Now I'm on a journey to the road home.

Married since 2001, had beautiful baby girl in July 08.

Guess who's back.

THIS GIRL!

My racing buddy hooked me up with Galloway's run-walk-run marathon method book and it's right up my alley.  I have direction now.  I've realized I'm like Po from Kung Fu Panda.  I can't be trained like the other masters.  I'm short, stocky, and Irish.  I'm a sprinter.  I'm built like a Quarter Horse.  I'm not designed to run 26 miles continuously.  However, I can run short distances quickly, recover quickly, and resume.  I am Po.  Dragon Warrior Runner.

And I'm back.

Aiming for Top of Utah marathon in mid-September with 2 half marathons in between now and then (one in April, one in July, both in Utah County)

Have been dealing with some fun sinus funk since Wed.  Was pretty miserable with cold symptoms.  Beat the heck out of it with plenty of rooibos tea & broth.  Was able to get back to gym today for slow, easy 2 miles (30 sec run/30 sec walk)

Frustrated. No matter what I do, I can't seem to break a 14 min mile without killing myself.  Today on my cool down, however, I noticed that I gained a lap on myself.  How is that possible when I can't break 14 mins?  LOL.  I was very certain I counted laps correctly.  It's not hard to keep track of small numbers (6.5 laps = 1 mile, so 13 laps= 2 miles.  I always count 6, then 7)

slow, easy 4 miles.  30 sec run/30 sec walk.  I may have gone farther.  I stayed in the 2nd lane of our track for all but 1 mile.  It took me 70 mins to do 4 mi.  I KNOW I do a 14 min mile (esp in this 30 sec on/off cycle), so I dunno what the deal is.  I suck at math.

Easy 2 miles- 30 sec on/30 sec off.  Hip/sciatic nerve buggin me.  Didn't push too hard cuz I'm just not feelin it today.  On one of my last laps I decided to see how long it takes me to cover the track.  They have a time list posted near the door telling you how fast you're doing your miles via the outside lane.  So I ran it in 100 seconds, not really pushing either.  The list said 97 seconds is a 10 min mile.

Befuddled.

I'm running 14 min miles, yet according to the chart my 1 lap was close to a 10 min mile.

*pounds head* WHY DO YOU SUCK SO MUCH AT MATH?

completely missed all of last week's training due to my Achilles flaring up.  I was supposed to do 6 miles on Sat, but I wanted to find an Achilles compression sleeve before I beat the crap out of it.  I'm afraid if I don't find said sleeve, I'll destroy my Achilles and there will go my entire training season.   (prevention is the best medicine, right?)

So I finally find one on Saturday afternoon.  I was running around all morning.  Hubby forgot to put dinner on, and we ended up eating out after getting groceries.  By then it was too late to run.  I figure *deep breath* it's okay, I'll run after church.  I have my sleeve now, everything will be fine... except on Sunday I woke up to SNOW.

FML.

The earliest I can get that 6 miles done now is Thurs.  I know it will take close to 2 hours and I don't want to spend that much on child care at the gym, so I need to go when Grace is in school.

At least I hobbled around the track for a mile today in my new Achilles sleeve.

Achilles is a difficult one. Mine kind of always stays with me. As long as it goes away during the run I just ignore it, like an old friend who doesn't need constant attention. On the other hand, my brother in law is out for a year with the same injury, so there are a lot of different grades of achilles pain I guess.

From ACorn on Wed, Feb 15, 2012 at 11:15:30 from 24.2.76.146

Way to get out and get a mile in! Flat is right don't be too aggressive with your achilles.

FML= fudgenugget my life. My Achilles doesn't hurt, just tingles noticeably when I put weight on it. It's disconcerting. I don't want to totally blow it and never run again.

learned something about myself today.  It takes me 2-3 miles to "settle down".  You know how when you run at first you think "I can't do this.  This is gonna suck.  How can I possibly go 26.2 miles?" and then a while later your brain quiets?  Well mine takes 2 or so miles to do it.  By mile 3 or 4, I start feeling like I don't want to stop.  Not necessarily an "I can go all day" feeling, but more like the bad thoughts go away and there's just peace and if I can just put my foot in front of the other one (which I can), I'll be fine.

Achilles sleeve seems to be helping, but my shins are whining at me.  Must find my calf compression sleeves.  I feel like I'm being held together by paper clips and bubble gum.

P.S.

SPAGHETTI DOUGHNUTS!

Was supposed to do 7 miles on Sat, but weather report looked less than optimal.  Hubby was working from home, so I took advantage of it, left the munchkin with him (ah, the wonders of Netflix!) and took care of things.  Broke it up into several parts cuz I'm a lazy pansy.  Stayed on the road in front of my house, so I got plenty of hill work.

was still pretty sore from my run on Friday up until yesterday morning.  Also I wanted to see how my Achilles held up without the sleeve.  Did an easy walk with my neighbor who wants to start exercising, but needs some motivation.  Took her on a fairly easy, 1 mile hilly route.  It snowed, which is not exactly a lot of fun for vibram komodos.  Don't know if I'll do any more today due to the cold (I could go to the gym I guess *shrug*)
I'm thinking I'll just take it easy this week since I'll be doing 9 miles on the weekend.

got to 3.5 mi at the hour mark and figured "meh, it's only 3 more laps".  So I did 4 miles.

Also I invented Murple.

8T mascarpone
8 oz greek yogurt (I used Greek Gods Artemis. It's currently competing with my beloved Fage total for supremacy)
1/2c blackberries
1/2c raspberries
raw vanilla (optional)

Pretty straight forward. Mix it all together. Eat it. I call it murple cuz it's mascarpone that turns purple.
And, yes, it's definitely my entire week's worth of fruit and probably 2 weeks worth of dairy rolled into one, but *pats tummy with contented sigh* WORTH EVERY BITE!

I am calling it my PWO meal

after our run, we stopped by San Gelato Cafe for breakfast, and 2 of the more seasoned marathoners expressed concern over me running/training a marathon in my vibrams.  Now I'm all paranoid.  I wear vibrams exclusively and I'll have been racing in them for a year by the time the marathon hits in September (and barefootin' it for a year & a half since I started walking skin on pavement May of 2011).  Anyone have more insight into why they were so worried?

Went out with my Galloway girls this morning to run around the capitol.  7  miles of hilly semi-Hell.  I thought my Achilles was angry at me post-run, but after reading an article, I think it might be my flexor digitorum longus which is right around the Achilles.  I know the space between my Achilles & Calves would like an epidural :P
I've been walking it out and stretching and it's helping.  If it was tendonitis, it would be getting worse.  So I think that's a relief.

Last week my vibrams were really rubbing my feet wrong and I picked up some blister block & Lady Anti Monkey Butt.  I put the talc (LAMB) inside my V's and rubbed it around good, then slathered on the blister block.  Worked like a dream.  It was cool today, though, so the real test will be when it's hot and my feet get really sweaty.

Went to breakfast afterwards at Whole Foods.  I love epic meal time!  Went to town on arroz con leche, berries, coconut, creme brulee french toast, scrambled eggs, milk, greek yogurt... I'm set till dinner!

Can I be whiney?  My sleep has been less than spectacular due to ache-y-ness.  I don't hurt, mind you, I just can't get comfortable.  My kid has been getting up at 6 & 7 lately, and I'm just NOT ready to deal with her that early.  Luckily she knows how to play quietly on her own and use the i-net.  Did I mention she's 3? LOL
If you've got kids, check out jumpstart.com.  It's what she amuses herself with so I can work on waking up.

Oh and something is going on with my foot below my big toe.  Might swing by chiropractor to get that checked out.

Walked 1/2 mi at gym, did intervals for 1 mi, then walked 1/2 mi.  I don't notice the problem in my foot when I run.  I notice it when I walk.

And I'm insanely sweaty.  What's up with that?  I haven't had a sweat ribbon down to my belly button in over a year.  My Highway to Hale royal purple racing shirt was nearly black with sweat in that nice little curve we all know.  Good thing?  My body temp must be up.  Fat burn, woo!

Found out over the weekend we are expecting our 2nd little monkey.  I know pregnant ladies race all the time, but I'm just a little bit terrified with my half marathon only a month away.  Seriously debating whether or not to pursue my marathon goal in Sept.  I'll be 4 or 5 months along by then.

I don't have any symptoms outside of getting a little tired around 2p (who doesn't?  2 o'clock lull), and round ligament pain when I sneeze or get up too fast.

Someone please give me the courage to follow through with my goal for this year (marathon) while having a safe pregnancy!

I would say play it by ear. You will know when the time comes whether you should go ahead or not. Wait until the last possible minute to plunk down your cash (I know this, I have missed my last two marathons in a row, and my reasons are not nearly as good as yours.) But whether you race or not, keep running. My daughter runs very late into her pregnancies.

I'm really being urged to try switching into a shoe with more shock absorption for longer runs.  I'm kind of in agreement, but I don't want to go back to toe corsets (regular running shoes), especially since I'm only 4 weeks away from the half marathon.  Is that really a good time to break in a new pair of shoes?
